MNF had roughly the same philosophy as RUN, i.e. a fast one-pass compiler
for instructional use, but I think it started from scratch, all done
by one very smart fella, James Mundstock. I can still imagine him sitting
at the console and typing "IDENT MNF" "ENTRY MNF".

Many years ago I had a job to "tweak" MNF to make it work better with 6/12
bit characters.
It was a bear to modify. It was about a foot-thick printout, all in very
clever COMPASS assembly language. One monolithic piece--
It took over 5 minutes of assembly time on a Cyber 172. Luckily the 172
was still in shakedown-mode that summer, so we had it all to ourselves.

>>although later versions appear to have been written in Pascal.

You may be mentally conflating the CYBER Pascal project with the MNF
project, both done in the 1970's at the U of Minn. Different folks, no
shared code at all.

Regards,

George
