AKA the FUDGE factor - Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt, but Great
Expectations.

As for your excellent peeve - try the corollary: technoblinkers.
These cause the mindset of technology uber alles, brought about by the
strange way that IT people arise.
IT is probably the only department staffed by people who are being paid
to follow their hobby. You get nerds and technoweenies who think that
technology is neat, that Microsnot is king, and that newer = better.
These are the people who bring the network down for maintenance when
they want to, who delete apparently unused accounts, who configure every
new PC a different way, and who treat every problem as an opportunity to
play rather than a failure of the system.

Give me the good old mainframe practice any day - make it work, keep it
working, don't ever stop it working unless you tell people first, take
interruptions to service seriously, keep good backups, pour your efforts
into doing it better for less.

Save me from hobbyists.
