I have eaten at and enjoyed all three. The first two are in East Bay; the third is in SF. 1. Peking Eastern House Restaurant, (408)263-2228 269 West Calaveras Blvd (also known as Hwy 237) Milpitas They serve what the Chinese refer to as "Northern food" (which is famous for hand-made noodles and buns). If you like noodles, you can order any of their soup noodle dishes. You can't go wrong. It costs approximately $8 per person for lunch, $10 for dinner, depending on what you order. 2. China Chili Restaurant, (510)791-1688 39116 State Street (in Town Fair Center) Fremont I would call this a Seschwan (sp?) restaurant. They have a good selection of spicy food. One of my favorites at China Chili is the "Jai Bin." I am not sure if it's on their English menu, but the name means "Grab Pancake." Chinese eat it like Americans eat dinner rolls. In addition to whatever entree and rice/noodle you order, one serving of "Grab Pancake" is enough for 4. Yes, you are supposed to use your hands. I think this is only available on weekdays for dinner. It costs approximately $7 per person for lunch, $10 for dinner, depending on what you order. 3. Chun Kang Vegetarian Restaurant (415)928-2178 608 Geary Street SF This is perfect for those who want to try something different. This is 100% vegan. It's my favorite Chinese vegetarian restaurant in Bay Area. They have a good selection of appetizers and entrees. About 80% of their food is Chinese; rest include Malaysian and Indian. For appetizer, the Assorted Five Flavors Plate (#1) is a must try. For entrees, Treasure Tofu (#64), Seaweed Bean Rolls with Ginger (#61), and Snow Peas with Tomato (#42) are very good. You should try their brown rice if you never had brown rice before. For dessert, try their (r)ice cream sundae. It's the vegan version of ice cream, made with rice instead of eggs and milk. We were really impressed by how much it tasted like real ice cream. If you prefer hot dessert, I recommend the "peanut paste soup." It's not too sweet as is usually the case in Chinese restaurants. I am not sure if it's on the menu, but you can always request for it by name. Price is approximately $8 per person for dinner. Last time 5 of us went, ordered 4 entrees, 1 noodle dish, 1 appetizer, plus two bowls of brown rice. It costed $40. Enjoy. -- Elsie Wu
