Unless you place a very low value on your time, it's cheaper to just buy
a box that does CallerID on Call Waiting.

However, you also have to purchase the service from your telco. If the
telco switch isn't sending you the CallerID data on Call Waiting, no box
in the world can grab it out of thin air.

Basically, what the deluxe box does is, when it receives the special
call waiting beep, it silences the audio path to the telephone set(s)
for the half-second or so it needs to grab the data, and then passes
back a DTMF "D" digit (what? your phone only has *twelve* buttons?) to
tell the switch to go ahead and send the modem data burst.

If you have multiple phones on your line (and who doesn't?) you may have
to do some fancy wiring to make the box work correctly, because it has to
be able to cut the audio path to all the phones, not just the phone that's
plugged into it.

If you have an ordinary caller ID box but have paid the telco for the
deluxe CID/CW service, you could try sending a touch-tone "D" when you
hear the beep, and see if the box decodes the signal, but I wouldn't
bet on it -- the box should shut off when the phone is off-hook, so that
it doesn't get swamped by regular modem traffic, etc.
