Your question is better than other responders have given you credit for.

I have a PowerBook G3 series running linuxppc, and have gotten pretty good
at getting into O-F.  First of all, you can only do it from a cold boot;
you can't restart and hold down the keys.  

The timing is critical. You need to press command-option-O-F after the
chime starts but just before it ends.  Don't rush it; it's easy to hit the
keys too soon.  But you have to get them down before the end of the chime.
