Sure you can, and this has been possible for a While.

 % ntpq
 ntpq> addv daemon_version
 ntpq> rl
 status=...
 daemon_version="xntpd ..."
 ntpq> host XXX
 ntpq> rl
 status=...
 daemon_version="..."

I haven't looked for a way to get the protocol version from the daemon
yet.
