I bought an IPX in the same condition about nine months ago ... was quite
a deal at 500 DM (ca. US$350) :)

Correct. The IPX has a built-in GX frame buffer, but you'd of course
also need mouse+keyboard.

: Can it use 4Mx36 - 80ns PC simms? I looked in the archives of the sun-managers

: have any experience of doing this?

Stnadard 72-pin "PS/2"-type PC SIMMs _with_ parity work in an IPX. Make sure
the access time is <= 70 ns. You should be able to use 1Mx36, 2Mx36 and
4Mx36 type SIMMs; I currently use one 4Mx36 SIMM.

The IPX actually uses only one out of the four parity bits provided. So, if
you find some x33-bit SIMMs (e.g. from an ELC), these will also work.

Hope this helps,
