In honour of *the* service provider which is giving access to all
of the worst spammers in North America. In case it's not painfully
clear, the following is dripping with sarcasm. Nay, oozing with it...

BLOCK OF AGIS
(words copyright 1997 by Joel Polowin; to "Rock of Ages"
by Augustus M. Toplady, music Thomas Hastings)

Block of AGIS, cover me
You're my fav'rite ISP. (1)
When they talk of junk-mail laws (2)
You will fight to aid my cause.
"Problem's solved, as you can see,
With the IEMMC." (3)

When complaints come over spam,
Shrug it off, don't give a damn.
When the protests come in flocks,
Put up SMTP blocks. (4)
When they try to rouse ALLTEL (5)
We will mailbomb them to hell.

It's our right to advertise --
Let no spam evade their eyes.
Crawl the Web and scan the news
For the addresses to use. (6)
Block of AGIS, send for me
Countless megs of UCE. (7)

Footnotes...
(1) "ISP": Internet Service Provider, a company that sells Internet
access.
(2) Junk-mail laws: at least two bills are under discussion in the
U.S. legal system seeking to restrict junk E-mail in the same way
that junk faxes are restricted.
(3)IEMMC: an organized coalition of spammers, sponsored by AGIS;
AGIS claims that IEMMC members have agreed to stop spamming through
AGIS, but no reduction in the incidence of such spam has been
observed.
(4) SMTP blocks: a software option that prevents AGIS' machine from
even receiving complaints sent from some addresses.
(5) ALLTEL is a Baby Bell company that made the mistake of purchasing
a share of AGIS; one of ALLTEL's shareholders has been trying to make
other shareholders aware of the problem. In retaliation, spammers
have forged tens of thousands of obnoxious messages with his name and
address, and have sent them to their usual mailing lists in a
successful attempt to trick people into taking revenge on him by
swamping his system with complaints.
(6) Spammers generate mailing lists by using software tools to scan
Usenet postings and web pages for addresses.
(7) UCE: "unsolicited commercial E-mail", a euphemism for spam.

Joel Polowin
jpolowin@cyberus.ca.ca.ca but trim address back to one ".ca"
(Spam searchers can fill their address lists with .ca.ca .)
