I don't know nothing 'bout no law but I do know that I've asked six
different Northwest Captains if they would mind if I used my GPS and
everyone said yes. In four cases, they exhibited a lot more interest
than I'd have thought. One asked me to give him a fix about half way
through our flight so he could compare with his instruments (he was
astonished at the accuracy, except for TAS which I'd had to guess at,
not knowing OAT and IAS). Another time, the First Officer came back
with his enroute charts and talked with me for several minutes.

Main problem I had was that it was difficult to maintain a good fix on
enough satellites since the antenna was stuck to a window on the side of
the plane.

I would certainly never use a GPS without clearing it with the flight
deck.
