I just discovered the sci.geo.satellite-nav newsgroup. It is the place
to read for GPS information. You will be overwhelmed.

I just bought a Garmin GPS III pilot. I have not taken it up in the air
yet, but have tried it in the car, hiking and in simulation. I think I
will be pretty happy with it in the air because it is easy to use,
requires little attention while enroute, and provides a lot of
additional information readily - approaching airspaces, nearest
airport/vor/ndb/waypoint/FSS.

It was $700 through Sportys and I have not seen it cheaper anywhere,
yet. There is not much cheaper with the aviation database and mapping,
but Magellan does have some non-mapping models.

Whatever you decide to get, be prepared for a better model at the same
price to come out within a year. This is a very fast paced development
area these days and everyone is learning what is important and how to do
it better.

My 2 bits.
