Hi Heinrich,
The waypoint record WITHOUT icons is normally
0x3a in length. For the same record WITH icons, it's length is 0x3c.
The extra two bytes (a short I think) is the icon. This is true
for both sending and receiving the waypoints records. The
least significant nibble value is the icon value in the range of
0 - 0xf, representing the 16 icons. The "temp" icon has
non-zero values in some of the other bits, but it seems safe
to ignore these both for up and downloading.
Hope this helps,
Richard.

Yes, 2 extra bytes are added to the waypoint data. The first extra byte is
the icon. The 12XL supports on 16, but other units have more. The second
byte has to do the how the waypoint is displayed on the GPS map page. Icon
with name, Icon only, or Icon with the waypoint description, allowing up
to 16 characters of text to be displayed with the icon. BH
