Received from Garmin:

Most of our current handheld units utilise a rechargeable lithium
battery to maintain memory (RAM), and real time clock operation while
the main batteries are removed and external power is not present.

The rechargeable Lithium battery in the unit should, when fully charged,
have the ability to retain memory for 3-4 months. This retention period
is slightly variable, and will slowly deteriorate at a rate of about
2-5% per year. At the end of the batteries life, it will essentially
turn into a capacitor, capable of holding memory for about 10 hours when
power is removed from the unit (internal and external).

A full charge on the battery is realised after approximately 10 hours of
the unit operating, or 5-7 days if the unit is not operating but has AA
batteries installed. Charge times assume a fully discharged lithium
battery. Lithium's are fortunately not affected by temperature.

Because of the sensitive nature of waypoints, we recommend always
storing the unit with a fresh set of AA alkaline batteries.

If you have put a new set of alkaline batteries in the GPS for more than
24 hours and are still getting the 'memory battery low' message, then
please return your unit to the address below, with an accompanying
letter giving full details of the fault:
