The II+ is much better. In the car I can set the II+ on it's side in the "well" in front of the instrument cluster and there's even a nice depression it fits into on top of the tilt wheel) and it picks up beautifully even under the sun shade. No problems ever with weak signals in any part of the car. It is a really nice display to have the compass bar, heading & speed displays. In the house it picks up even when not near a window, unlike the 12XL that needed to see the sky in some way. The signals are pretty marginal, but it will lock on. Of course by putting the antenna in the window and connecting it with a bit of RG-59 it's very much better. Buy one if you can find it in stock!
