I too have played around with the map files, examining the format, etc.

I haven't got too far due to lack of time, but I'd be very interested to
find out how far you have gotten and what the technical details are.

I'm assuming you've found the XOR required to turn the files back into
semi-plain text?

Yes, I have found out the XOR key quite early, but then I've been 
disappointed not finding all the labels I expected to name cities, roads 
POIs.
I have a document where I have noted all what I have discovered but 
unfortunately it's in italian. The sooner or the later I'll translate and 
distribute it.
