Are you sure you are reading the lat/long correctly?  The unit can be
set to display in various formats (i.e. degrees or degrees & minutes or
degrees & minutes & seconds).  If you give a specific example it would
be easier to diagnose the problem - e.g. "I was on a hill top shown by
USGS 7.5' Quad Diablo as lat. N37d 35m 40s and long. W121d 22m 35s and
the GPS read lat N37d 34m 55s and long. W121d 22m 30s."
