John,

it is true. I have known the ferry since about 1970 and have
used it once, a few years ago, after the event. It is still
operating from the village of Caputh to the other side of the
river Havel. (By the way, a former girl-friend of mine lives in
Caputh.)

From memory (unreliable), there were at least two passengers in
the BMW when the driver turned into the river. They shouted at
him to stop, but he insisted and sank the car. They all
survived, dove out of the sunken car and swam back to the shore.

The name of the ferry is Fähre [=ferry] Caputh-Geltow and the
coordinates of the Caputh side where the accident happened are
E 12° 59' 09", N 52° 20' 50".
